Hey folks, it’s Amie, and I got my first tulips this week—so I had to share!

The first tulip of the season. (Amie Rivers)
|
All the credit to my wife, who had this one weird gardening tip of watering them every day. (Don’t forget: Pella’s and Orange City’s tulip festivals are coming up soon!)
Newsletter reader Judy D. sent me her own flowers with this note:
“I love these grape hyacinths and so do the butterflies! Seems things are blooming early this year! Happy spring!”
|
If you’ve got flowers blooming in your garden, I’d love to share them!
And we’ve got another hilariously-named full moon coming up Tuesday:
|
*snort* *giggle* OK, I’m done.
|
According to the Farmers’ Almanac, the “Pink Moon” (which won’t actually be pink, unfortunately) most likely draws its origin from the early springtime bloom of moss phlox (a wildflower native to eastern North America) which also goes by the name “moss pink.”
April’s full moon also goes by other names:
- “Moon When the Streams Are Again Navigable” (Dakota),
- “Breaking Ice Moon” (Algonquin),
- “Moon of the Red Grass Appearing” (Oglala),
-
“Budding Moon of Plants and Shrubs” (Tlingit),
- “Moon When the Geese Lay Eggs” (Dakota),
- “Moon When the Ducks Come Back” (Lakota),
- “Frog Moon” (Cree), and
- “Sucker Moon” (Anishinaabe).
If you’d like to read by the light of the full moon, Tuesday also happens to be World Book Day.

In-vitro fertilization (IVF) has become a political talking point since the Alabama Supreme Court ruled in February that frozen embryos were people and that discarding them would be considered killing unborn children.
But there’s more to this story. And we want to give those who have an IVF experience a chance to talk about it.
Have you gone through IVF? Would you like to share your story?
We understand this can be emotionally difficult, and if you’d prefer to be anonymous, we will honor that.
If you’ve had an IVF journey and would like to add your story, email us here.

🧑🏫 What you need to know about Iowa’s bill to arm school staff 🔫
|
Possibly the WORST stock photo we’ve ever used!

Teachers with guns, AND no consequences for what could happen with those guns? Just another day in the Iowa Legislature!
Republican Gov. Kim Reynolds is expected to sign a new law that will allow Iowa schools to arm staff and grant them legal and civil immunity in the event of a shooting.
The bill—HF 2586—is part of Iowa Republican lawmakers’ direct response to the Jan. 4 school shooting in Perry. (Again, for those in the back: the Perry shooter was stopped by unarmed staff.)
Plenty of readers have been emailing and messaging Ty about what the bill means for students, what parents are allowed to know, and what training teachers have to go through. Here are those answers:

Ona is a cuddly kitty who is generally laid back, but dogs and small children can stress her out. She needs a mature home, and one without dogs (or with slow introductions). She might be shy at first, but she loves to be petted and to play with catnip toys, wand toys, and balls. You can meet her at ARL West.
Pluto is friendly and thrilled to meet new people. He’s also good at doing his own thing, and he gets along with dogs who are also chill and friendly. Check him out at ARL Animal Services.
