Hey folks, it’s Amie, and it’s March Madness time!
St. Patrick’s Day is also NCAA Tournament Selection Sunday (both men’s and women’s basketball).
So grab a green beer and find out whether the Iowa women get a No. 1 seed, as well as where the Drake men (MVC conference winners), ISU women (who made it to the title game), and more of our excellent state teams will land (or rudely be denied!).
|
Plus, the UNI and Drake women’s teams, as well as the ISU and Iowa men, could also make it (their tournaments runs through Sunday).
And let’s not forget our smaller schools: The Wartburg women‘s team made it to the DIII NCAA Final Four last night! (UPDATE ON WIN OR LOSS)
I don’t know about you, but I’ll cheer on any and every Iowa-based team that makes the tournament. Unless they’re playing each other, of course. Then it’s:
- UNI (my alma mater!)
- Iowa (longtime family fave)
- every other Iowa team
If you’re into basketball, too, I’d love to hear who you’ll be cheering on!

In celebration of the late Ruth Bader Ginsburg’s birthday today, remember her for her accomplishments, including:
- She co-founded the Women’s Rights Project at the American Civil Liberties Union in 1972 to combat discrimination on the basis of sex;
- She was also a fierce defender of the Equal Pay Act, and became the first Supreme Court justice to officiate a same-sex marriage.

Work harder to escape poverty

In case you’re wondering if the end game for some Iowa Republicans is to completely eliminate any help Iowans might need to lift themselves out of poverty:
Lawmakers are considering a bill that would ban Iowa’s only basic income pilot program from operation. They also want to stop other cities and counties from starting a similar one in their own communities.
Specifically, it’s an attack on a SINGLE organization, UpLift, that is testing to see what a basic income program in the state could look like.
Read all about it here.

Reese is an affectionate kitty who would love to make a home with you. She loves attention and playing. If you give her a chance to warm up, she’ll be your best friend.
Axyl loves to ride in the car and make new friends. No one is a stranger to him, and he’d love to go on adventures with you. He gets along well with smaller dogs and he already knows how to sit on command. Give him a mature home without young kids and he’ll be happy.

Iowa House Republicans passed a bill to arm teachers and school staff last week, as Starting Line Correspondent Chase reports.
Commenters were having a field day:
- “Trust the teachers with guns, but not books?” asked one.
- “So we’ll arm them but not pay them properly?” asked another.
- “…but also scared they’ll talk about sexuality and racial inequality. Something says this isn’t about keeping kids safe,” pointed out another.
