Hey folks, it’s Amie.
From all of us at Iowa Starting Line, Merry Christmas, Heri za Kwanzaa, and happy all-the-things!
|
(And, though we don’t have a slick graphic made up for it, Happy Boxing Day on Tuesday to our Canadian and British commonwealth friends!)
I’m here for any holiday that brings folks together—particularly if there’s food and some fun traditions to go along with it. (Singing is a bonus!)
Forget the unserious people that try to convince us there’s “a War on Christmas.” With Iowa’s cold, dark, short days of December upon us, any holiday and tradition that warms and brightens your spirits is a good thing in my book—and there’s room enough for them all.
——-
Speaking of holidays: Are you a New Year’s resolutions kind of person? If so, what are your resolutions this year? If not, why not? I’ll talk about that in next week’s newsletter, so feel free to reach out.

Iowans’ favorite Christmas movies 🎥
|
What’s your Christmas movie go-to?
Already, the wife and I have watched the original “A Christmas Story,” “Home Alone,” and “This Christmas,” and plan on a rewatch of “How the Grinch Stole Christmas!” as well.
Avery’s annual re-watch is “Eloise at Christmastime” (with the legendary Julie Andrews) and “Love Actually” (nothing says Christmas like rampant workplace harassment, amirite?).
Ty isn’t quite as sentimental as the rest of us; so far, he’s already seen “Friday After Next” and the new John Woo revenge flick “Silent Night.” But he might be veering back into sentimentality with the ’90s Jonathan Taylor Thomas road trip comedy “I’ll Be Home for Christmas” (which apparently has an Iowa Connection!).
Yet only one of these made the top Christmas movies, according to our Iowa Starting Line fans.

You’re stressed. Poor Clark Griswold is stressed, too. So take the stress out of movie night or a family gathering by laughing along with “National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation” (1989).
|
“Die Hard” (1988) is the perfect one to put on for your action-movie-loving relatives. When everyone just wants Bing Crosby to sing them to sleep after the meal, “White Christmas” (1954) is your musical-loving jam. And, even though I’m a hater, let me give “Love Actually” (2003) some actual love: The Billy Mack aging-musician subplot is decent!

Charlie is a playful sweetheart who gets along great with other cats and with kids. And all he’s looking for is a home and family who can offer the love, attention and laser toys he deserves. Check him out at the Siouxland Humane Society.
Dutton is an energetic boy who wants lots of toys and bones to chew on. He’s good with kids and other dogs and he just needs a place to match his energy (and maybe help him learn some new tricks). And he’s waiting at the Siouxland Humane Society.

During a campaign rally in Waterloo this week, former President Donald Trump—who has referred to Iowa Gov. Kim Reynolds as the country’s most unpopular governor—jabbed at her again when he called Iowa Attorney General Brenna Bird the “most popular politician right now in Iowa.”
(Makes you think Trump’s a Festivus kind of guy.)
