Iowa Gov. Kim Reynolds approves more restrictions on abortion access

A new bill signed into law by Iowa Gov. Kim Reynolds will further restrict access to abortion medication in the state.

The laws will take effect on July 1, 2026, and will impact access to drugs like mifepristone, which are commonly used to terminate pregnancies before 10 weeks as well as treat miscarriages.

Iowans could previously be prescribed the drugs via telehealth, but will now require an in-person visit with a healthcare provider for the purpose of abortion.

For those living in rural areas with already limited access to healthcare and facing maternal and OB-GYN shortages, the drugs will now be extremely difficult to access, according to Iowa Capital Dispatch.
