Amie here. I don’t always look forward to the darker days of winter, to the holidays, to the next few months of cold and snow.
I’ll tell you what always gets me through: Remembering the goodness in people, and in my fellow Iowans, especially.
So that’s who I’m dedicating this special edition to: All of the Iowans, like you, who help their communities in whatever way. You all contribute to keeping this state a place where neighbors have always helped neighbors, simply because it’s the right thing to do.
That spirit of generosity is what I think this time of year is really about.

If you’re looking to give back to your community, volunteering your time with a local organization in need is an excellent option.
In Iowa, there are a wide variety of volunteer opportunities throughout the state at local food banks, state parks, libraries, hospitals, and more.
If you’re not sure where to start, there are several organizations in Iowa that share volunteer opportunities from multiple establishments on their website, such as Volunteer Iowa. Use the online portal to search for opportunities in your area by clicking the “Use my location to show opportunities near me” link.
