Former Colorado Governor and craft beer aficionado John Hickenlooper made the most of his stop at Court Avenue Brewing Co. on Sunday. He kissed a baby, poured a craft beer for a voter (and then himself) and got to introductions.
Inevitably, one of the first questions Hickenlooper received from a voter was regarding how the state, under his watch, rolled out one of the nationโs first recreational marijuana policies. Polling in recent years shows increasing support in Iowa for both recreational and medical marijuana. This topic strayed from the standard 2020 campaign issues Democrats have addressed on their stops in Iowa, which could be an example of how Hickenlooper potentially sets himself apart from a growing pool of candidates.
He also faced questions about his position on border security and the recent government shutdown.
โItโs hard for me to support funding for something thatโs purely symbolic, that wastes [taxpayer] money that could have real benefits if spent elsewhere,โ Hickenlooper said.

Additionally, the governor said he would rather use some of the $5.7B proposed by President Trump to fund โborder security systems that work.โ
Hickenlooper also emphasized his willingness to engage in problem solving, something he indicated he had been hearing from voters as a desired trait for their 2020 pick.
โOne of the things Iโve tried to do with my years in politics is to get people to believe in government again,โ Hickenlooper said. โTry and find common sense solutions to the problems that are facing everybody. I think thatโs what voters are going to look for. I might be completely wrong, but I think theyโre going to be a little tired of the dysfunction in Washington.โ
One thing many caucus-goers may be looking for, however, is a younger candidate. Hickenlooper, 66, is younger than Joe Biden and Bernie Sanders โ both of whom are said to be considering running โ but older than Kamala Harris and Juliรกn Castro, but that doesnโt seem to faze him.
โIf you feel you have enough experience to do something, then do it,โ Hickenlooper said. โAnd if someone tells you youโre too old, and you feel younger than what they say, go do that. You have as much experience as you believe you have, and you have as much energy in terms of age as you feel inside you.โ

Hickenlooper still hasnโt officially announced that heโs running for president, but between a stop earlier in the day at a house party in West Des Moines, and this event downtown, he has good things to say about his experience in Iowa.
โItโs a little bit like โ and this is going to sound sappy โ a little bit like when you think about when youโre a kid โ your birthday, or Christmas,โ Hickenlooper said. โSomething you really look forward to. But then when you get there and youโre in it, itโs more fun than you thought.โ
