‘Ghosted for months’: Your letters, Oct. 27, 2026

“My daughter was asked to leave because I asked the school to work a 504 plan for her.”

Autumn soups:

“A friend made up a recipe for gochujang potato soup that is chef’s kiss. I’ve also started using the family chili recipe as a base and modifying it based on whatever mood strikes me as I’m putting it together.” — Alan S.

“I found a recipe for a delicious crock pot soup. I don’t make it in a crock pot though. I crave this stuff!! It’s not really healthy, but healthy choices can change that. It’s called Knock Your Sox Off Crockpot Soup. I use Johnsonville Italian Sausage, I’ve tried different sausage and it’s not the same. One thing I will say is I never put 2 cups of cream in it. And I use a large can of tomatoes. I use extra Italian spices because that’s how I like it!! Try it! You won’t regret it!” — Krista S.

Last week of outdoor farmers’ markets:

“In response to your newsletter comment about local farmers’ markets, I thoroughly enjoy visiting local markets across Iowa, and I particularly love the Des Moines Market. I love the people who visit and work the Market, and I can graze there so effectively!” — Dan E.

Event this weekend:

“The Manning Hausbarn-Heritage Park has Plow Day 10/31 starting at 10 a.m. I am the director and I was told by our farm crew that we have around 30 teams coming to plow the land with horses like our ancestors. We have tours starting at 10:30 a.m. and 1 p.m. The park itself is 23 acres of 366 years of history. If you’re in the area, we’d love to have you!” — Director Erin Whitfield

Can young people afford to have children?

“NO THEY CAN’T AFFORD ANOTHER CHILD AT WHAT IT COSTS NOW TO RAISE THE CHILDREN, IS THE STATE PAYING TO RAISE THE CHILD?” — Gary P.

Private schools asking students to leave:

“I read your story and I had the same issue happen to me with a private school. My daughter was asked to leave because I asked the school to work a 504 plan for her. We had a meeting with AEA coordination after being ghosted for months, and principal, us and 504 coordinator agreed that we would move forward with it. Then principal emailed us that they cannot follow it, and gave us an ultimatum to leave the school if we continue to pursue 504.” — Vashi P.

What you’re reading:

“Iowa native Shawn Gude has just written ‘the first popular biography’ of Eugene Debs, early 20th century American Socialist leader. See youtube clip of him on Breaking Points; apparently there was also a review in the Wall Street Journal, which I haven’t yet seen.

“I reached out to Shawn … He says he hopes to speak in support of his book in Iowa the week after Thanksgiving.” — Bill D.

“FYI Amie: Iowa’s cancer crisis — facts and its future.” — Greg C.

Still connected to Iowa:

“Amie, I live in Florida and all my kids live in Iowa. Red Oak and Stanton are small farm towns, so they really don’t have a good transportation system. So when I come up there, I’m captured until they decide to take me back to the airport. So I tell them, I don’t come up there after September or before April. Weather can change fast up there and I’d rather be down in Florida when the snow comes. Of course, in the winter, I get all the kids and grandkids coming down here, so everything works out.

“I’ll be up there again in the spring when my grandson graduates high school. I like Iowa, so this time I will probably drive so I can take some side trips while I’m there and take in some great scenery. You have a wonderful day and thanks for listening.” — Michael S.

Feedback:

“Respectfully, please take me off your mailing list. I do not back the same horse that you do.” — Brad C.

“Hi im todd r u single” — Todd C.

“Get rid of the windmills. Sick and tired of seeing windmills across Iowa. They are eyesore and half the time broken. What a waste of money and you got it in your letterhead.” — Sharon B.
