Recent-immigrant Iowans worried, upset, and angry with a new law held vigils in four Iowa cities last week.
Big crowds came out to Davenport, Des Moines, Iowa City, and Waterloo to protest SF 2340, a new Iowa law that deputizes state and local law enforcement to act as federal immigration officials, giving them complete legal immunity to do so.

Starting Line’s Ty Rushing has a great recap of the rallies here.
At the rally in Waterloo, Black Hawk County Sheriff Tony Thompson said the law was “unenforceable as it’s written” and he would not be making his deputies โstereotype constituentsโ and โracially profile random motorists or passersby.โ
The law is potentially also illegal under the Constitution: The US Department of Justice said it will file a federal lawsuit against the law if it’s enforced.
What if we *didn’t* make laws that violate the Constitution and make law enforcement’s job harder, and instead made it easier to work legally in a state with a stagnating population and a desperate need for workers?
