Yes, Iowa still has queer community. And this month, we’re spotlighting it

Iowa news organizations often have bad news for us in the queer community these days. But we’re trying something new this month at Iowa Starting Line: Finding queer community.

LGBTQ-IA: A weekly miniseries from Iowa Starting Line spotlighting queer community in Iowa.

Iowa news organizations often have bad news for us in the queer community these days. But we’re trying something new this month at Iowa Starting Line: Finding queer community.

We’re starting up a new video series on the queer community that still persists here—because you can’t spell LGBTQ-IA without Iowa.

The Iowa Legislature for the last several years has tried to erase the gains queer Iowans have fought for over generations.

  • From banning education of queer history,
  • banning books with queer sex acts,
  • preventing folks from accessing medical care or going to the bathroom,
  • and even repealing trans civil rights,

they want to remake Iowa into an unwelcoming place.

But if you look, queer community is still here. And this Pride Month, I’m looking to spotlight that.

I’ll be talking with Iowa’s queer leaders about the organizations and community spaces that celebrate us, rather than denigrate us; that fight for us, not against us; and how they do so with optimism, hope, and even joy.
