The Asian & Latino Coalition announced this week that they are officially endorsing Cindy Axne in the Democratic primary for the 3rd Congressional District. The decision follows a forum they held with the three Democrats last week. The Asian & Latino Coalition has a large membership base in the Des Moines metro area and has become increasingly influential in Democratic politics over the past several years.
It adds to a string of recent endorsements for Axne as the primary enters its final phase before the election on June 5. EMILY’s List announced their backing of Axne recently, as did former Senate Majority Leader Mike Gronstal.
The decision on which candidate the Asian & Latino Coalition would endorse was made by their board members and the panelists who asked questions at the forum. Those panelists included three high school students and several young professionals. The organization endorsed Nate Boulton for governor last year.
[Editor’s note: I personally moderated the forum, but didn’t participate in the discussion or vote to endorse since I still need to cover the race.]
The 3rd District contest is getting increasingly busy in the final month and a half before the primary. Eddie Mauro is out with his first introductory TV ad this week, and Axne’s campaign has began reserving ad time for the first week of May.
