Steve King Votes Against Bill Backing Peaceful Transfer Of Power

Iowa Congressman Steve King was one of five House Republicans on Tuesday to vote against a resolution affirming lawmakers’ support for a peaceful transfer of power between presidents.

King, who lost the 4th District primary election to state Sen. Randy Feenstra, joined GOP Reps. Matt Gaetz of Florida, Louie Gohmert of Texas, Clay Higgins of Louisiana and Thomas Massie of Kentucky in voting against House Resolution 1155. The Republican-controlled Senate unanimously passed its version of the legislation last week.

Today on Twitter, King said the bill “targets” President Trump and “only 5 of us stood by his side.”

The Senate & House were stampeded to pass H. Res. 1155 which exclusively targets @realDonaldTrump. Only 5 of us stood by his side. It states “there should be no disruptions by the President or any person in power”. 1155 excludes Biden, Antifa, & BLM, all threats to our republic.

The bills were introduced in the wake of President Trump’s refusal to commit “to a peaceful transfer of power after the election” should he lose in November to Joe Biden. The legislation does not mention Trump, Biden or any specific groups.

“We’re going to have to see what happens,” Trump said during a press conference at the White House. “You know that I’ve been complaining very strongly about the ballots, and the ballots are a disaster.”

On Tuesday night, during the first debate between Trump and Biden, Trump reiterated his false claims about widespread voter fraud and did not say whether he would leave office if he is defeated.

“It’s a rigged election,” Trump said.

On social media, King also has spread conspiracy theories about voter fraud and the validity of mail-in voting, tweeting during the debate that mail-in ballots are “an invitation to voter fraud.” There is no evidence of widespread voting fraud in presidential elections, either by in-person or mail-in voting.
