A former field organizing fellow and volunteer for Elizabeth Warren’s Iowa campaign died Monday night in a car crash outside of Council Bluffs in Western Iowa.
Zachary Presberg, 22, a native of Piedmont, California, was driving east from Council Bluffs toward Oakland when a semi-truck struck his car after he attempted to pass another vehicle. He died on the scene.
“Bruce and I are heartbroken over Zac’s passing and offer our deepest condolences to his parents, family and friends,” said Elizabeth Warren, in a statement. “Through his dedication and volunteerism, Zac represented the very best of us.”
“Zac was a treasured member of our team, and we are devastated by his passing,” Iowa for Warren State Director Janice Rottenberg said. “Campaigns grow together like families, and we’ve lost a valued member of ours. We love him and will miss his generous spirit.”
Presberg joined the Warren campaign as a campaign fellow in the summer, then chose to continue on as a volunteer after. He organized in Cass County for the Warren campaign.
In January 2016, weeks before the Iowa Caucus that year, a staffer for Ben Carson’s presidential campaign died in a van accident that occurred on slick winter roads. That tragedy occurred outside Atlantic, Iowa, one county over from Pottawattamie County.
