Guest Post From Progress Iowa
Former Texas State Senator and candidate for Governor Wendy Davis (D-Texas) will deliver the featured address at the 2015 Progress Iowa Holiday Party on Wednesday, December 16th at the Meadows Events and Conference Center in Altoona, Iowa. More information can be found online at: http://progressiowa.org/holiday2015.
“Our leaders need to be reminded to fight for the middle class and champion workers issues,” Davis said. “With women in Iowa making just 77 cents for every dollar a man makes, and in a state where workers have been waiting far too long for a raise in the minimum wage, I’m excited to add my voice to the fight, and to speak with Progress Iowa’s supporters in December,” Davis added.
Davis made her mark in the State Senate as a champion for women, working families, and fighting for equality for all Texans. Davis held a thirteen-hour-long filibuster in June of 2013 to block Senate Bill 5, a measure which included restrictive abortion regulations. The filibuster helped delay passage of the bill beyond the midnight deadline for the end of the legislative session. Davis has also long been a supporter of LGBT rights, voting for Fort Worth’s nondiscrimination ordinance based on sexual orientation in 2000. And while in the State Senate in 2011, Davis authored the only LGBT-inclusive version of anti-bullying legislation and co-sponsored youth suicide prevention legislation and lobbied to kill an anti-transgender marriage bill.
“Senator Davis has been a champion for working families, women, and equality for all,” said Matt Sinovic, executive director of Progress Iowa. “We are thrilled to have her join us for our annual holiday party, and know that Iowans will be excited for her to bring her message to our state.”
More than 200 donors, activists, and progressive leaders attended the holiday party in 2014, when the featured address was delivered by Senator Bernie Sanders of Vermont. Organizers are expecting a strong turnout for the event on December 16th, scheduled to begin at 6:30 PM. Tickets to the annual Progress Iowa Holiday Party are $50 each and available at progressiowa.org/holiday2015.
