US Sen. Chuck Grassley, a self-described Iowa farmer, questioned Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins on the possibility of using vaccines against the emerging screwworm threat.

Rollins responded by letting the senator know that screwworms are, in fact, a flesh-eating pest, not a virus or a disease, and therefore cannot be eliminated through vaccination.

(re: the above comment: Screwworm was first eradicated, with Mexico’s help, in 1966, though Grassley at that time was serving in the Iowa House, not the US Senate.)
