Local news is essential for democracy.
Our reporting cuts through false narratives, documents whatβs actually happening in our communities, and provides voters with the clear, factual information they needβespecially when the stakes are high.

Plastic pollution:
-
“Thank you for posting the video re: plastic pollution. The best advice is to bury plastic in landfills until a solution for our overuse of plastics can be worked out, yet many people donβt know this. I hope everyone watched that clip. …
Just want to call your attention to my Substack which I write from Urbandale. Each column is written to inspire conversations and thoughts about using plastic alternatives. I know it doesnβt sound exciting, but I do have a sense of humor. π My first column, titled βBring Your Own Fork,β was written around the waste deposited in Iowa during RAGBRAII. Each column offers products and alternatives for single-use plastic, all of which Iβve tried out myself.
My columns are free. The main objective is to inform, raise awareness and spark changes.
Thanks for your writing. I always find lots of interesting things on Iowa Starting Line.” β Nadene E., Urbandale
State layoff rumor:
-
“Heard from family member working in Des Moines government position: New state layoffs coming soon. Department of Management.
This may not be new. If not, sorry to bother! ”
β Bill R., Iowa City (NOTE: I checked with some folks in the know, and so far there’s nothing but rumors to report. But I’m keeping my ear to the ground!)
Funding Russia to kill American soldiers:
Reader feedback:
-
“Solid, good reporting, Amieβas usual! How I wish there would be a groundswell of opposition to what the Republicans are doing at the federal and state level! Keep up the good work, and keep the faith! Some days I know it’s hard.”

“‘Strong, free nations donβt hide from history.’ β Todd Dorman
Amie: Whatβs your take a few years back to the fact that many historical monuments and statues were removed, defaced, and destroyed? Or the fact that the left so badly wanted to erase history that they renamed streets and wanted to go so far as to rename birds that were named after ‘colonizers?’” β Jim H.
(NOTE: I think there’s a big difference between learning about American historyβincluding the ugly partsβand glorifying Confederate war generals via statues and street names, many of which were put up decades after the fact in order to uphold white supremacy and promote the Confederate’s preferred Lost Cause history.
Per the Atlanta History Center, which goes into more detail here, “Put simply: an equestrian statue of a Confederate general in front of a courthouse or capitol building is not about mourning or loss. It is about power and who was in charge.”
As far as changing some bird names, the American Ornithological Society decided to change all English names of birds currently named after a person, colonizer or not.)
