Iowa is home to more than 70 state parks, so if you’re looking for a way to make your weekend plans shine, we suggest starting with this list of majestic landscapes right in our backyard.

1. Backbone State Park

A great option for hikers, Backbone became Iowa’s first state park in 1920.

2. Maquoketa Caves State Park

If bats don’t scare you too much, Maquoketa has the state’s largest collection of caves.

3. Ledges State Park

Canyons and towering cliffs in one place? You’ll want to head just outside Boone to Ledges.
