Growing older definitely has its perks. If you live in and around the Des Moines metro area, there are some excellent deals to take advantage of once you hit your mid-50s. While there are several websites where you can find offers from more national chains, these places in and around Des Moines offer great senior discounts as well.
Check out these deals for those 55 and older all around town and get ready to save!
1. D.A.V. Thrift Store
Every Monday at D.A.V. Thrift Store, seniors can take 20% off their purchase. That’s a great deal on top of a great deal when you are shopping at thrift store prices. All proceeds from D.A.V. Thrift Stores support disabled veterans in the Des Moines area. Shoppers can find electronics, books, clothing and accessories, toys, seasonal items, and much more.
2. Fleur Cinéma & Café
If you love movies, head to Fleur Cinema & Café. While many movie theaters offer a senior discount for certain days or movie screening times, at Fleur Cinema & Cafe, seniors can get a $7 ticket any time for any show. Plus, there’s a full coffee bar, draft beer, wine, Italian sodas, a variety of dessert bars, and popcorn, of course! Fleur Cinema has been named Des Moines’s “Best Overall Theater and Best Concessions” by The Des Moines Register and is known for showing Hollywood blockbusters and indie films.
3. Greater Des Moines Botanical Center
For a tropical getaway in the middle of the city, make plans to visit the Greater Des Moines Botanical Center. Here, seniors 65+ can save $1 off the general admission price, and AARP members can take advantage of buy one, get one free tickets. Wander through the iconic greenhouse dome or out into the gardens along the Des Moines River to take in the many varieties of plants that call the Botanic Center home. If you plan to visit often, you might also consider becoming a member of the Botanical Center, as members always receive free admission. A senior membership is just $50 for the year, which is $25 less than a traditional membership.
4. Science Center of Iowa
Another great community attraction that offers a senior discount is the Science Center of Iowa. Admission price for seniors ages 65 and older is $15, or two dollars off general admission. AARP members can also enjoy buy one, get one free tickets. There are tons of cool science exhibits and the planetarium to explore while visiting the Science Center.
5. Bowling Alleys
Several bowling alleys around the Des Moines area offer senior discounts. Bowling alleys tend to be known for their great specials all throughout the week. But seniors who are members of AARP can take advantage of special savings. Bowlerama Lanes in Des Moines offers a buy one, get one free game of open bowling deal. Air Lanes Bowling in Des Moines offers a coupon to AARP members to buy three games of bowling and get three games free.
6. Golf courses
Fore! Several golf courses around the Des Moines area know that seniors love to golf (and have the free time for it), so they tee up some discounts. The following golf courses in the Des Moines area offer special rates for seniors, whether on single games or season passes:

9. Des Moines Art Center
Admission is always free at the Des Moines Art Center, but membership has its perks. Seniors ages 65 and older get a 20% discount on purchasing a membership to the Des Moines Art Center, giving them special discounts on classes and programs. You might also consider signing up for the museum’s Creative Aging program designed for adults age 55+ to gather at the Art Center and learn about art while making community connections and fostering cognitive health.
10. Hy-Vee
Every Thursday, shoppers ages 55 and older receive a 5% discount at checkout at local Hy-Vee stores. There are more than Hy-Vee stores in the Des Moines metro area to choose from, so get your shopping list ready!
11. DART
Seniors looking to take public transportation in the Des Moines area are in luck as well. DART—or the Des Moines Area Regional Transit Authority—offers a discount for riders ages 65 and older. DART’s Ride to Thrive program offers rides at half price. Riders can sign up for the program, are provided a special rider ID card, and are eligible for two years.
