The Iowa State Education Association on Thursday called out Republican Rep. Ashley Hinson for making a political statement far from the realities of her district. The teachers union took to social media in response to a photo circulating of Iowa’s 1st District congresswoman wearing a mask demanding, “OPEN SCHOOLS NOW! Follow the science, not the unions!”
Louisiana Republican Rep. Steve Scalise’s office made the new masks for several House Republicans, including Hinson, before a GOP press conference on Tuesday at the U.S. Capitol.
“Hi @RepAshleyHinson! Looks like you haven’t had a chance to check in with educators in your district lately. We’ve been working extremely hard to educate students safely in-person, many of us since early fall,” ISEA’s official account tweeted.

Iowa Gov. Kim Reynolds signed an order in February requiring districts across the state offer 100% in-person learning options for their students. Hybrid learning options had been available in all Iowa schools since fall.
Fox News reported that Hinson, along with other GOP Republicans, have been “pressuring Democrats to pass restrictions on the new coronavirus money to schools to condition full funding on being physically open. Those GOP efforts have failed so far.”
