A recount confirmed Democratic state Sen. Sarah Trone Garriott’s victory over Republican challenger Mark Hanson.

The votes are tallied, and incumbent state Sen. Garriott of West Des Moines is safe.

Hanson, of Waukee, challenged her 24-ballot lead to a recount following election night. But the recount boards found the original results hold up.

Trone Garriott will continue to represent Senate District 14, which includes Waukee, Adel, Van Meter, and portions of West Des Moines and Clive in Dallas County.

“I’m so thankful to my supporters, to my volunteers, for how hard they worked during this election,” Trone Garriott said. “It’s exciting to get to go back and get to continue to serve my district.”

When the legislative session begins this January, the Iowa Senate will remain in Republican hands.

The seat was among three Iowa Legislative races and one congressional race where the candidate trailing called for a recount. Democratic state Sen. Nate Boulton lost his seat to Republican Mike Pike following his recount. The remaining recounts are for House District 98 and Iowa’s 1st Congressional District.

Scott County has not finished it’s recount of Iowa House District 98. In that race, state Rep. Monica Kurth of Davenport, a Democrat, won reelection just 45 votes ahead of Republican challenger Nathan Ramker of Blue Grass. Ramker has called for a recount.

Only some of the 20 counties in Iowa’s 1st Congressional District have finished their recount. U.S. Rep. Mariannette Miller-Meeks won the district by 800 votes. Democratic challenger Christina Bohannan called for a recount.
