Pumpkins, gourds, and hay bales, oh my! Fall has officially arrived in Iowa and front porches across the state are being decorated with a plethora of pumpkins. Check out this list of pumpkin patches across the state where you can pop in to pick out your assortment.
Whether you pluck a pumpkin right from the vine or gather up some gourds, you are sure to find some fun when you visit one of these great Iowa pumpkin patches. Plus, you’ll quickly learn that picking out a pumpkin isn’t the only fun you’ll have. With all sorts of farm-friendly activities to partake in, you can make a whole day of your visit to these family-owned pumpkin patches.
1. Pumpkinville & Cornmaze
Mitchellville
Stop by pumpkinville to pick up tiny and large pumpkins, along with ornamental corn, broom corn, and straw bales. Located not too far off of Interstate 80 in Central Iowa, this pumpkin patch is also a popular spot to visit for its corn mazes, one 15 acre field and one smaller maze perfect for little kids. Open Tuesday through Sundays from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. (8 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays).
2. Harvestville Farm
Donnellson
You won’t believe your eyes when you see the 125-plus varieties of pumpkins, squash, and gourds grown on this farm. Plus, a visit promises more than 40 activities for kids of all ages to enjoy. And do yourself a favor and grab an apple cider slushie. Open from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Monday through Saturday and 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Sundays.
3. Hoefling’s Pumpkin Patch & Corn Maze
Marcus
You’ll need to plan plenty of time to look through the hundreds of varieties of pumpkins to be found at Hoefling’s Pumpkin Patch. Snap some memorable family photos and wander through the corn and grass mazes or hop on a hayrack ride while you are there, too. Open Tuesdays, Wednesday, and Fridays from 3 to 7 p.m. and 12 to 6 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays.
4. Plain Ol’ Pumpkins
Clear Lake
Come for the pumpkins, stay for the fun. At this popular patch near Clear Lake, you can pick out your pumpkins for the season while also enjoying all the fun and games, including pedal carts, climbing the haystack pyramid, making s’mores or launching a pumpkin in the slingshot. Open Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sundays from 12 to 4 p.m.
5. Buffalo Pumpkin Farm
Buffalo
Another spot to grab some pumpkins in Eastern Iowa is at Buffalo Pumpkin Farm. Here they also offer hayrack rides, a petting zoo, and a kids train. On the weekends there are pony rides and goat milking opportunities as well. Open every day from 10 a.m. until 6 p.m.
6. Welch’s Pumpkin Patch
Council Bluffs
Pumpkin seekers in Western Iowa can visit Welch’s Pumpkin Patch to find just the right jack-o-lantern. Located essentially in the backyard of the Welch family, you’ll feel welcome to enjoy the fall fun. Just head out back as they say and bring cash to pay for what you pick. Open Monday through Friday from 4 to 7 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m.
7. Bart’s Farm & Pumpkin Patch
Marion
This is not only a great spot to pick a pumpkin right from the field, but you’ll find fun photo ops, horse and pony rides for the little kids, a corn maze, and hayrack rides. Open weekdays from 3 p.m. until dark and from 9 a.m. until dark on weekends.
8. Pride of Wapsi Pumpkin Patch & Corn Maze
Long Grove
This family owned pumpkin patch has grown quite the following near the Quad Cities. Of course you’ll find great pumpkins, but you’ll also find a whole host of fall activities and fun shops to visit. We highly recommend a glass of apple cider with a pumpkin spice donut as well. Open 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Thursdays through Sundays.
9. Colony Acres
North Liberty
This farm has grown into a seasonal operation before fall, but autumn is really it’s time to shine. There are lots of fun games and activities to enjoy after you pick out your pumpkin, plus a ten acre corn maze. And don’t pass up the personal pizzas and donuts. Open Wednesdays through Sundays from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.
10. Bass Farms
Mount Vernon
You can’t miss Bass Farms as you drive along Highway 30 in Eastern Iowa. The fall fun practically beckons you to pull off the road to stop and enjoy. Pick out your pumpkins, but also check out their fun slide, jumping pad, corn maze, and take a hayrack ride. Their “Family Fall Festival” takes place every weekend leading up to Halloween. Open every day from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m.
