During the special legislative session in which Iowa lawmakers passed a near-total abortion ban, Iowans plead for their lives in urging lawmakers to vote no.

One of those Iowans was Natalie Fixmer-Oraiz, a University of Iowa professor and mother of two, who was told by doctors that another pregnancy would be life-threatening for her.

“If I were to get pregnant, abortion would safeguard my life,” she said. “And I want to live to parent my children.”

Felicia Hilton told Iowa legislators she was mortified her family chose to live in Iowa in light of the ban’s proposal. Now, Hilton’s words take on a new relevance after the ban officially took effect on Monday, July 29.

“I cannot believe the self-righteousness of the people that think this law somehow won’t impact people,” she said.
