Steve Bullock: Appoint More Western Judges, Consider Court Expansion

Montana governor Steve Bullock has a new idea for the type of justices he’d seek for the Supreme Court. After touring an ethanol plant and a grain co-op earlier this week, Bullock told Starting Line he would pursue justices who come from the Midwest or Western regions of the country. “I think that when you have your whole court that are folks who are all, essentially, coming from the East Coast, all coming from a small handful of schools, you’re really losing a big perspective of what this country is,” he said. Bullock said that as Montana Attorney General he argued […]

The Other Side Of Iowa You Should See

Years ago, when I was a young pup of a reporter for the Des Moines Register, my assignment was covering state and federal courts. Normally, it amounted to reporting on the dirty laundry of society that gets scrubbed in the courts — the murders, the robberies, the embezzlements and the civil lawsuits. But whenever time permitted, I would grab a seat in the back of U.S. District Judge William C. Stuart’s ornate courtroom in the federal courthouse in Des Moines and watch as he administered the oath of citizenship to newly naturalized citizens of the United States. It was always […]

He’s Cycling. John Hickenlooper To Ride In RAGBRAI

Iowa’s annual cross-state bicycle event will have at least one presidential candidate joining the trail with fellow riders. John Hickenlooper will ride his bike from Norwalk to Indianola during the Register’s Annual Great Bike Ride Across Iowa later this month. The 67-year-old former Colorado governor is planning to ride 12.2 miles of the 39.9 mile bike ride scheduled for Tuesday, July 23.  RAGBRAI© is the largest and longest bicycle ride in Iowa. Bikers traditionally cross the entire state —from the Missouri River to the MIssissippi — in one week. It’s a great way to see the state, get in some […]

Bill Witt, a former legislator from Black Hawk County who has worked on many environmental and long-term care issues. Jackie Wellman, a community activist in West Des Moines. Ruth and Scott Thompson, party activists in Des Moines Melissa Fath, a community activist and University of Iowa […]

Iowa Moms Pack Joni Ernst’s Office To Protest Migrant Detention Centers

Dozens of women and children packed Iowa Sen. Joni Ernst’s office in Des Moines for several hours over the last two days to protest squalid conditions at immigration detention centers along the U.S.-Mexico border. The group arrived Tuesday at the Federal Building hoping to speak with Ernst over the phone, who currently is in Washington, D.C., while the Senate is in session. Posts on Twitter and Facebook documented a day spent at the senator’s office as they were repeatedly told by her staff she was not available to talk to the group. They brought a one-page letter with them, signed “Iowa […]
